| ORIGIN |
The Boston Terrier
is one of the few breeds "Made in the USA." Bred in 1870
as a cross between the Bulldog and the Bull Terrier, the
Boston Terrier was originally
developed for use in traditional dog
fights. Additional crosses were made with the French
Bulldog, providing the foundation for today's Boston Terrier which
has less aggressive tendencies. |
| DESCRIPTION |
The Boston Terrier is
solid, compact and square in build, with a short smooth coat.
The hair is extremely fine and close to the skin. A
short, square muzzle leads to an ample black nose. Ears are
set high, erect, and either natural or cropped. Coloring is
generally brindle or black and white, although one may also find
red or chestnut. |
| TEMPERAMENT |
This breed
holds the reputation for being a first-class household pet.
They are
good-natured, enthusiastic, and have a big heart. Their
loving and affectionate disposition has won them the nickname of
"American Gentleman". Although at times they can be somewhat
willful, they enjoy learning and so benefit from firm training
early on. They are very sensitive to the tone of one's voice.
The Boston Terrier
is not
aggressive - reliable with children, especially good with the
elderly, and friendly with strangers. They can make a
vigilant little watchdog, barking only when necessary.

| PREFERRED LIVING
ENVIRONMENT |
This breed
adapts well to apartment life but benefits from regular walks or
sessions of free play in a fenced-in yard. This breed is
sensitive to weather extremes. In cool inclement
weather, a good rain coat and sweater will help keep them warm and
dry. In hot weather, they should be carefully monitored to
avoid
risk of heat exposure. |
EXERCISE
AND
GROOMING |
The Boston
Terrier makes a great dog for physically active people. They
can withstand long runs and vigorous exercise. This breed is
easy to groom. Daily rub downs with a rough cloth as well as
cleaning of the eyes and folds in the face is all the grooming they
require. Bathe only when necessary. |
| HEALTH
CONCERNS |
As with
all short-nosed breeds, the Boston Terrier may have breathing
difficulties when stressed by exertion in hot or cold weather.
They are also prone to snore. |
