ORIGIN The Miniature Pinscher was originally bred in Germany to hunt rats and control the rat population in the stables. It is not related to the Doberman Pinscher and is in fact an older breed.  It was developed from terrier breeds (the word "pinscher" means "terrier" in German) and possibly Italian Greyhound blood to give the Min Pin its tiny size.
DESCRIPTION The Miniature Pinscher is a compact, sleek, and muscular breed with square proportions. The front legs are straight, the feet small, and it has an unusually high stepping gait.  It has short, straight, and lustrous hair, generally red, black and tan, or chocolate in colour and appears well-groomed.  The ears are generally cropped and the tail docked.
TEMPERAMENT

This small dog has a tremendous vitality.  Perpetually active, it is also alert, intelligent and loyal.  The Miniature Pinscher is often quite aggressive with other dogs, behaving more in accordance with its courageous spirit than its tiny stature. The Min Pin is good with well-behaved children and plays nicely with other pets if appropriately socialized.  This dog can be headstrong, so needs firm handling.  Otherwise, the king of toys may become a tyrant. It dearly loves to bark. Its tendency to chew small objects creates a choking hazard, so care must be taken about its surroundings.

PREFERRED LIVING ENVIRONMENT This breed makes a wonderful condo or apartment dog.  However, it is important to remember that Miniature Pinschers do not like inclement weather.
EXERCISE
AND
GROOMING
Very little grooming is required to keep the Miniature Pinscher tidy. The Min Pin is an average shedder, so occasional brushing to remove loose hair, or wiping with a warm, damp cloth is all that is necessary. The Min Pin does require a great deal of exercise.  Several indoor play sessions daily will suffice, so a yard is not necessary. However, if the dog is put in a yard, make the fence high and tight to preclude adventuresome escapes
HEALTH CONCERNS The Miniature Pinscher is a healthy breed.  However, care must be taken to ensure that they do not injure their thin bones by jumping off high objects.
