Also known
as the "Lion Dog" or Shih Tzu in Tibet, this small lively
breed was a product of
crossing the Lhasa Apso from Tibet with the Pekingese of China.
This breed dates back to the early 1600's, however was not bred in
Europe till the mid 1930's.

DESCRIPTION |
Fairly
long and stout with a broad chest and straight back with an
abundant long thick coat. It is a solid sound little dog for its
size. |
| TEMPERAMENT |
The Shih Tzu was and
always has been bred as a companion dog and this shows in it's
temperament. They are lively, active and independent but considered
to intelligent but stubborn. They make a great dog for first time
dog owners. They require firm but gentle training. |
| PREFERRED LIVING
ENVIRONMENT |
An excellent dog for
apartment and condo living this dog was meant for city living.
These dogs are sensitive to overheating so caution should be taken
against long exposure to heat. |
EXERCISE
AND
GROOMING |
The Shih Tzu requires
good exercise with at least a once a day long walk. They require
daily brushing and combing to insure their coat does not become
matted. It is highly recommended that the hair on the head be tied
back out of their eyes. Attention should be paid to ensuring the
ears are kept clean and dry, along with cleaning around the
eyes. |

CONCERNS |
There are no major
concerns with the Shih Tzu however some of the minor concerns are,
renal cortical hypoplasia, entropion, trichiasis, PRA, KCS, CHD,
otitis externa, portacaval shunt, inguinal hernias |
