| ORIGIN |
The Maltese is a very
old breed with hotly debated origins. It is certain that this
dog or a similar breed existed in ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome.
Even though the Maltese is named after Malta, there is no
proof that the breed is a native of this island |
| DESCRIPTION |
The Maltese is
considered a toy breed. With a very long silky white coat on the
entire body completely straight without curls or waves. Always pure
white or pale ivory in color. |
| TEMPERAMENT |
Although it may not
look like it, this breed is considered to be tough and tireless.
The Maltese has the liveli- ness you would expect of a
renowned ratter. Very playful and animated, they make a great
companion. They are affectionate and spectacular as a lap dog. They
do need firm but gentle training. |
| PREFERRED
LIVING ENVIRONMENT |
This breed does very
well in an urban setting, with apartment or condo living.
They do not like inclement weather. |
EXERCISE
AND
GROOMING |
The Maltese
sheds little to no hair, so is considered
excellent for allergy sufferers. Their coat is very soft and
requires daily combing and brushing to prevent matting. Bathe
regularly but ensure the animal is thoroughly dry afterward.
Ears and eyes should be cleaned
weekly, along with regular tooth brushing.
They enjoy active play but do not need a lot of
exercise. |
| HEALTH
CONCERNS |
As with other small
breeds, the Maltese require good dental hygiene (ie. regular
brushing and scaling of their teeth). Most common health concerns
include patella luxation, open fontanel, and
hypoglycemia. |
