| ORIGIN |
The Lhasa Apso is
known to have existed in Tibet for thousands of years.
However, it wasn't until the 7th century that the Lhasa
Apso was bred to emulate, at least in appearance, the holy
lion - the symbol of Buddha's dominance of the animal kingdom.
Because exportation of the breed was forbidden, they did not appear
in the West until about 1930. |
| DESCRIPTION |
The Lhasa Apso is an
exotically appealing breed with a long dense coat of heavy hairs
lying straight. The body is long and compact, with short
well-muscled legs and a sturdy bone structure. Coloring ranges from
golden, sable, and honey, to dark grey or parti-color (several
distinct colors, black, white or brown). |
| TEMPERAMENT |
The Lhasa Apso is
a hardy, lively and strong-willed dog that can be considered
stubborn. They are courageous and always on alert, making an
excellent watch dog. Affectionate and intelligent, they make an
excellent pet and are good with children. They need firm but
gentle training. |
| PREFERRED LIVING
ENVIRONMENT |
This dog does well
living in apartments, but care should be taken with separation
anxiety, so early training is needed around this. |
EXERCISE
AND
GROOMING |
The Lhasa Apso is a
very strong dog and can easily handle long walks or exercise. If
one prefers to keep their naturally long coat, it is important to
maintain regular brushing and combing to avoid matting. |
| HEALTH
CONCERNS |
This breed has been
known to develop juvenile renal disease as well as diabetes. They
can also suffer from Ectropion and progressive retinal
atrophy. |
