| ORIGIN |
The ancestors to the
Dachshund probably lived in Germany a few hundred years ago.
They were
originally bred for hunting badger and weasle. The
Dachshund name originates from the German words, "Dachs"
meaning badger, and "Hund" meaning dog.
With a low compact
body, the breed was well suited for going into burrows. |
| DESCRIPTION |
The Dachshund is
classified into two sizes - the standard, and the miniature, and
has a body twice as long as its height. Standard coloring in the
Dachshund are red, golden, and black-brown. The coat comes in three
variations - smooth, long, and wire-haired. |
| TEMPERAMENT |
A robust and
courageous dog, the Dachshund has great endurance
and makes an excellent guard dog.
Humorous and playful, they make loyal companions, but are known to
be possessive and jealous, wanting to dominate over other dogs. The
smooth variety is considered the most energetic. The
wire-haired variety is the most rustic and has the greatest hunting
instinct. The long-haired is the calmest of the three. All
Dachshunds should have firm but gentle training from a very young
age. |
| PREFERRED LIVING
ENVIRONMENT |
These dogs are good
for apartment living, although they will need firm training around
barking issues. They should be carried up or down stairs to
prevent damage to their lower back. Being of a hunting hound
background, they will dig their way out of fenced-in yards, so
should always be supervised
if left outside. |
EXERCISE
AND
GROOMING |
The Dachshunds need no
special exercise but can and will endure long solid walks. The
smooth-haired Dachshund has little body odor and is easy to care
for. Occasional but thorough rubbing of the whole body with a damp
cloth or waterless bath will suffice. The long-haired
Dachshund requires daily brushing and combing, while the
wire-haired needs professional grooming. The teeth should be
brushed on a regular basis. |
| HEALTH
CONCERNS |
Dachshunds requires
special attention to ensure they do not injure their lower
backs.You should
never allow this breed to jump off any object, such as a bed
or couch. They also have a
tendency to become overweight and lazy, which puts added strain on
the back and poses a serious health risk. |
