| ORIGIN |
Originating in the
western mountains of Scotland, the West Highland Terrier is
believed to be a "white" descendent of the Cairn Terrier.
Also known as the "Westie," this breed was
originally bred to control the population of rats, fox, otter and
other vermin. |
| DESCRIPTION |
The Westie
is a hardy, compact little dog with deep chest and muscular
legs. It bears a 2 inch, straight, all white
coat. The breed has a short wide head and
closely fitted jaw, penetrating deep-set eyes, and
small pointed ears. |
| TEMPERAMENT |
The
merriest, most optimistic and most sociable of all the indigenous
terriers of Scotland, this dog loves companionship and makes a
wonderful family pet. The Westie is very observant and alert -
considered to be an excellent guard dog. Lively and
self-assured, they do require firm but gentle training. The Westie
loves to dig and bark. |
| PREFERRED
LIVING ENVIRONMENT |
These dogs are
suitable for people in the city as well as the country. They are
very active indoors and will do okay without a yard. |
EXERCISE
AND
GROOMING |
This breed enjoys a
good daily walk or play session in the park, but won't be too upset
if a day is missed. The coat is fairly easy to groom and
sheds little to no hair. Brush daily to keep the coat clean
and bathe only when necessary. Trim about every four
months. |
| HEALTH
CONCERNS |
Most Westies are
healthy. Some are prone to chronic skin problems. |
