ORIGIN The Cairn Terrier is one of the oldest of the Scottish terriers.  This breed derives its name from its ability to move about in the cairns(piles of stones) where it hunted rabbit and fox.  The Cairn Terrier is an ancestor to the Scottish Terrier and the West Highland Terrier.  This dog will be remembered by its famous appearance in The Wizard Of Oz.
DESCRIPTION These small robust dogs possess a fox-like facial expression.  The head is proportionate to the body, the muzzle short, and the ears pointed and carried erect. The tail is undocked.  The Cairn Terrier has a rough double coat and coloring can vary from cream, wheat, or red, to gray or near black.  All brindle colors are acceptable.
TEMPERAMENT

The Cairn Terrier is a rustic, lively and spirited game dog. They have a dominant personality but are considered very cheerful and mischievous.  Alert and barking at the least noise, this breed is considered to make a good watchdog.  Very firm and early training is required.

PREFERRED LIVING ENVIRONMENT Considered to be more at home in the country, this dog does, however, adapt well to any environment and can make a good apartment dog.  Owners are warned to keep an eye on them since the breed has a natural proclivity towards excavating and redesigning flower beds.
EXERCISE
AND
GROOMING
These dogs require good solid exercise and are considered excellent swimmers.  Brushing two or three times per week is required.  Professional grooming is not necessary.
HEALTH CONCERNS The Cairn Terrier is generally considered a healthy breed, although some of the genetic weaknesses that may arise include juvenile renal disease as well as paralysis related to an enzyme deficiency.
