| ORIGIN |
The
ancestors of this breed were northern European sleigh dogs, similar
to the Norwegian Elkhound, the Keeshound and Samoyed. The reduction
in size of this popular dog began in Pomerania in Eastern Europe,
hence the name. They became a favorite of Queen Victoria and she
established her own kennel for breeding. She showed her dogs,
with some success, making the breed very popular in England.
Further development of the breed occurred in the
USA. |
| DESCRIPTION |
The Pomeranian is a
tiny, compact dog with an abundant
ruff around the neck and
chest area, and a distinctive tail that fans forward over the back.
It has a wedge-shaped head and pointed erect ears, and its
profile is often likened to that of a fox. The coat is
abundant and long, and usually solid in color- black, brown,
red, orange or sable. |
| TEMPERAMENT |
The
Pomeranian is a wonderful companion dog, both affectionate and
tenacious in spirit. Very agile, curious and intelligent, the
Pomeranian makes a great little watch dog. They are quick to bark
and need firm but gentle training early on.

| PREFERRED LIVING
ENVIRONMENT |
The Pomeranian makes a
perfect apartment dog but will fit in just about anywhere.
They are very active indoors and do not need a
yard. |
EXERCISE
AND
GROOMING |
This breed's very
long, double coat should be brushed and combed daily.
The Pomeranian is
a shedder. Brush their teeth
weekly and take them for regular dental check-ups. Cleaning of the
ears and eyes should be done on a daily basis. The Pomeranian does
not require extensive exercise but does enjoy a long
walk. |
| HEALTH
CONCERNS |
The Pomeranian is
prone to early tooth decay, so feeding of dry food is recommended
to keep teeth and gums healthy. Due to the small bone
structure of this breed, care should be taken to not
letting them jump off high objects. Some Pomeranian
blood lines are susceptible to luxating patellas, heart and
skin problems, as well as eye infections. |
