ORIGIN Also sometimes called the Continental Toy Spaniel, the Epagneul Nain of Belgium, a favorite of royalty, is said to be the ancestor of the Papillon. The breed is one of the oldest of European breeds with recorded history going back at least 700 years. The Papillon was perfected by French breeders in the late 1600 early 1700's. This dog has been brushed on canvass by many famous painters over the centuries,  famous owners included Marie Antoinette and Madame de Pompadour.
DESCRIPTION The butterfly ears are carried either erect or drooping. A Papillon with drop ears is called Phalene Papillon (Moth). There is a well-defined white nose band. The Papillon's muzzle is short and a bit pointed. The Papillon is white with patches of any color. A color other than white should cover both eyes and both ears back to frontThe coat is abundant, silky and flowing-straight with a resilient quality.
TEMPERAMENT The Papillon is a friendly, intelligent dog and is tougher than it looks, they love outdoor exercise. Considered a very gentle and affectionate dog, this dog loves to cuddle but is still lively, vivacious and charming. For all its playfulness this dog can be calm, patient, gentle and dignified. It may be very possessive of its owner and resent outsiders. They are steady, obedient and are not yappers. Papillons can be trained to perform small tricks.
PREFERRED LIVING ENVIRONMENT Although this dog can be a good city dog you will have to be cautious of its behavior in a apartment setting. The Papillon is known to be protective of its owner and property and will require good early training around its barking habits. They are not yappy dogs.
EXERCISE
AND
GROOMING
This playful little dog loves to go for a run but does okay if confined to the house for days at a time. Like all dogs, they benefit from a regular exercise regiment. A daily combing and brushing of the long, silky, single coat is recommended.  The Papillon is usually clean and odorless. Bathe or dry shampoo when necessary and keep the nails clipped and have the teeth cleaned regularly because they tend to accumulate tartar. They are average shedders and do not matt or tangle.
HEALTH CONCERNS These dogs can sometimes be prone to Luxating Patella's (knee caps) which can be surgically corrected. Like most small breeds care must be taken when under anesthesia.
